Asterix, Obelix and the Gang.

He did it! From Slashdot: "Alex Tew, a 21-year-old student from a small town in England, earned a cool million dollars in four months on the Internet. Selling porn? Dealing prescription drugs? Nope. All he sells are pixels. The idea: turn his home page into a billboard made up of a million dots, and sell them for a dollar a dot to anyone who wants to put up their logo. A 10 by 10 dot square, roughly the size of a letter of type, costs $100. He sold a few to his brothers and some friends, and when he had made $1,000, he issued a press release. That was picked up by the news media, spread around the Internet, and soon advertisers for everything from dating sites to casinos to real estate agents to The Times of London were putting up real cash for pixels, with links to their own sites." ... and of course, this fellow's success has sparked copycats...

An American teenager studies 'immersion' journalism by traveling to Baghdad --- without telling his parents. Balls of steel, this one.

I never get tired of this. Live tracking of all air traffic over North America. Love the animated activity feature.

If you ever wondered what

If you ever wondered what the millionaires at Google do with their spare cash, here's one answer: they buy 1/8th of a ton of Silly Putty and then wonder what to do next.

I got my dad a copy of the Complete New Yorker DVD set - a collection that encompasses the entire history of the magazine (up to last year), searchable and very convenient. But, it has its detractors.. This fellow is disgruntled in that it's not (currently) possible to copy the whole thing onto your hard drive and he finds it annoying to have to swap discs back and forth if you're searching across ranges of years. I think his complaint is a little narrow in that if he organized himself better his workflow could take account of the limitation of the DVD format and reduce his annoyance level. It is quite easy to limit one's search to only the years included on the disc currently inserted.

My daughter Chloe's 15 minutes of fame begin... now!

Invest in Kids is a worthy charity that specializes in the first five years of a child's life, calling attention to the reality that providing a nurturing, positive environment during that time is extremely important and can have a significant effect later on. My aunt Nancy Birnbaum is the CEO of the charity, and asked if Chloe could help out with their latest campaign (see above).

"Nearly 1 in 3 Canadian children has a social, emotional or learning problem that may have a lasting impact on their lives. Many of these problems are related to a lack of positive parenting. But with the right resources and support to help parents better understand what they can do to support their child’s development, this can change."

The photography was done by Glen Reichwein - his studio is awesome! Here are the other posters in the campaign (which will be appearing in bus shelters and mall posters, etc..)

And here's a proof copy of one of the shots they did of Chloe:

It's a Wonderful Life

Last night was opening night for my first group photography show - organized by the Toronto Photography Meetup group at the Art Square Gallery on Dundas St. (across from the AGO)... About 200 people showed up and it was a very good time. I have three prints in the exhibit (seen below, first three on the bottom row) and the show runs until January 22nd.

A picture series of Volkswagen's new 'transparent' assembly plant in Dresden. Marvellous!

The old classic, Frank Capra's "It's a Wonderful Life", was also produced as a radio play with the original stars. Here's an mp3 with the whole show, including the Luxo Sponsor breaks.

Fly me!

Man buys $7,000 all-you-can-fly Air Canada ticket, flies 56 out of 60 days and logs over 1 million miles, earns $70,000 worth of vouchers for free flights from Air Canada. Not a bad two months' work if you ask me. Who says air travel is too expensive!
