The Family Circus meets Cthulu - it was only a matter of time before the dark lord's syrupy tendrils enveloped the saccarine, circular world inhabited by Bobby, Billy and their annoying sister.

Light Field photography with a
Light Field photography with a Hand-Held Plenoptic Camera - some Stanford U. students have developed a camera that takes images that have alterable depth of field. The potential for this technology is impressive - I'm liking it for the creative potential - in that if you can alter the focus along a parallel plane in the image, why couldn't you do tilting and shifting as well? This will blow the lens market out of the water.
The teaser trailer for Superman, the remake, has been released - and it includes the voice of Marlon Brando as Jor-El... Brando's been dead for a year and a half but they decided to use his dialogue from the 1977 Superman movie. Amazing. Hope his estate gets a paycheque.
Wow. I wonder what the neighborhood committee thinks about this guy?

These two jokers work in the printshop/mail room in my office. They are instantly and always available for wacky photographs. Taken with my tilt/shift lens.

"Five questions non-Muslims would like answered" from the LA Times, by Dennis Prager.
1) Why are you so quiet?
2) Why are none of the Palestinian Terrorists Christian?
3) Why is only one of the 47 Muslim-majority countries free?
4) Why are so many atrocities committed and threatened by Muslims in the name of Islam?5) Why do countries governed by religious Muslims persecute other religions?

Dillinger Escape Plan is a terrific name for a band.
Clayton James Cubitt is a photographer with an awesome eye - his website has a terrific gallery of images he's made of Katrina victims as he helps his family rebuild their lives in New Orleans.
The School Board in Pennsilvania that had supported putting Intelligent Design on the curriculum in their district was thrown out in last night's mid-term election in that state. In other news, the 'creator' of the Flying Spaghetti Monster (a logical response to Intelligent Design) has been given a $80,000 book advance. More on FSM here.

The Ultimate Star Trek Collection - for the life-lacking basement dwellers among us, costs only $2500US and includes 212 DVDs containing everything ever produced under the Star Trek name... with the glaring omission of the Animated Series from the 70's, which admittedly has not yet been released on DVD.
Encouraging news from China, that Elephant in the Energy-Consuming Corner - they are building four 'eco-cities' that are supposed to be self-sufficient on energy and water, and aiming for zero emissions. Not a bad idea at all. Hope it proves successful. The whole world should pay attention to this. If China can do it, anyone can.
Scott Adams, creator of Dilbert, has a blog.
Vatican Rejects Intelligent Design?
"A Vatican representative has expressed a defense of the theory of evolution, stating that it is "perfectly compatible" with the Genesis story of creation. "The fundamentalists want to give a scientific meaning to words that had no scientific aim," he said at a Vatican press conference. He said the real message in Genesis was that "the universe didn't make itself and had a creator"." Of course, it'd probably be best if fundmentalists actually talked to, say, the rabbis who wrote the whole thing down. The Orthodox rabbis I've spoken find it amazingly amusing that people take the creation story as literal truth, rather then a story about YHWH's power."

Veteran German photo company Agfa
Veteran German photo company Agfa has declared bankruptcy. They fell for the thinking that digital photography was just a passing fad... sigh. This may have unhappy consequences for those of us who like the way Agfa's lab machines process our prints (they are a favourite of photo lab technicians, too...) – hopefully their technology will be bought and marketed by someone else.

In a judgement that is
In a judgement that is likely to effect DUI convictions across North America, defense lawyers have won access to the proprietary source code in a popular model of breathalyzer, made by the CMI corporation of Kentucky. Thing is, the government does not own the rights to the code and therefore has no ability to hand it over, particularly because CMI is refusing to reveal its code for fear of revealing trade secrets. Because of this Catch-22, drivers charged with DUI may have an iron-clad defense at their disposal should they choose to employ it.
Emails from former FEMA Chief Michael Brown during the Katrina hurricane aftermath are quite enlightening, and sometimes comical - they underline just how unprepared he was to deal with a real challenge like Katrina.
